Description

The deterioration of social and institutional trust is accelerating; people in communities everywhere are tired of speaking up and not feeling heard. Surveys and focus groups rarely capture the rich breadth of people’s lived experiences. Local in-person forums such as town halls and open meetings fall short as civic spaces, attracting the usual attendees in what are often inadequate efforts to capture the full range of community input.

These times demand better listening channels and stronger civic spaces where input shared by community members sparks more informed and transparent decisions from our leaders

Cortico’s Local Voices Network (LVN) platform brings people together in recorded small-group conversations around their lived experiences. Through a powerful combination of AI and human listening, LVN enables organizations to make sense of the conversations they collect, surfacing community voices into public dialogue and decision making – with authenticity, nuance, and transparency that surveys and focus groups cannot match.

You’ll be working on our online platform that supports community organizationsjournalistsLVN’s unique human-machine system is the product of an effort led by Cortico in cooperation with MIT’s Center for Constructive Communication (MIT CCC).

From August – November 2022, Cortico is partnering with the NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) on a Public Health Corps (PHC) storytelling project. The PHC is a city-wide effort to expand the public health workforce by partnering with community groups and community health workers to eliminate COVID-19 inequities through outreach and education. It is active in over 74 NYC ZIP codes and includes about 70 community groups. Cortico will be working with 30+ PHC community partners to assess and document the impact of their community engagement on COVID-19 acceptance, collecting personal experiences of community members through 60+ recorded small group conversations.

The NYC Engagement & Listening Fellow will be the on-the-ground coordinator of this work – supporting partners in recording conversations and working closely with the remote Cortico team to build a community storybank with shareable highlights and insights. This work will involve implementing technical support to ensure a positive partner and participant experience, facilitating conversations (as needed), correcting transcripts for analysis, and supporting our unique human-led sensemaking work by sorting and categorizing highlights in an effort to elevate insights that will be shared on a public site.

You’ll be reporting to our VP of Partnerships & Programs and collaborating closely with our Partner Support Lead, Conversation Analyst, and team of Engineers.
