The Transformational Language Arts Network (TLAN) was founded in 2005 to support and promote the spoken, written, and sung word as a tool for personal and communal transformation. We offer:

The TLA Network is incorporated in Massachusetts, and has employed a coordinator or director since 2006. This position was initially a few hours per week and has grown over time with the organization. TLAN is managed by a governing Council that meets nine times each year via teleconference and once in person.


The Managing Director is the only paid employee in the network and will work remotely, though must be available for in-person council meetings and for the annual conference.

The TLAN Managing Director will be a 20 hours per week hourly job reporting to one contact on the governing Council. The primary responsibilities of this position are 1) Council support and development; 2) marketing and outreach; 3) fundraising support; and 4) operations which include administration of the annual conference, online classes, certification programs, finances, and record-keeping.

The ideal candidate will have entrepreneurial and administrative skills that include experience and expertise in board/council support and development; event management; marketing and outreach; administration of education and certification programs; excellent written and oral communication skills; and financial and administrative experience relevant to a small not-for-profit organization. The ideal candidate will be committed to the values of the Transformative Language Arts Network and understands the necessity of arts across all areas of life and work.


  1. Council Support and Development - 20%
    1. Coordinate with and implement council initiatives to grow and strengthen the council, including recruiting and training new council members and filling essential leadership positions;
    2. Assist with arranging and participate in appropriate board development and training to strengthen the council's leadership capacity;
    3. Provide technical, logistical, and strategic support and guidance to council chairs and committees as needed, including helping coordinate monthly and annual meetings.
  2. Marketing and Outreach - 20%: Substantial marketing efforts are required for the annual Power of Words conference, 10-15 online community classes, 2-4 online self-paced classes, the TLA Foundations certifications, the Your Right Livelihood certification, and the forthcoming Teaching TLA certification.
    1. Maintain and update the organizational website as needed;
    2. Schedule and post event and class-specific social media, advertisements, emails, etc.;
    3. Design and create appropriate graphics for online and in-print materials;
    4. Assist the council with organization-wide social media marketing on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram, and others;
    5. Survey and report back to council best practices for keeping in contact with and building the organization's membership and followers; and
    6. Provide technical support for volunteers writing or editing TLA Blog or Chrysalis: A Journal of TLA, and doing organizational promotion through podcasts or video-conferences.
  3. Fundraising - 10%: The Managing Director will assist the board with fundraising initiatives:
    1. Write and/or edit fundraising materials;
    2. Research appropriate funders the council may consider approaching; and
    3. Support council members in donor cultivation.
  4. Operations - 50%: Operations include conference, educational and training, and financial and office administration:
    1. Conference Administration 20%: The Managing Director will work closely with the conference chair and committee as well as the council in event management for the organization's annual conference.
      1. Assist the conference chair with strategic and technical support for the conference committee and integration of other volunteers;
      2. Update the organization website and assist with social media updates and promotions as needed;
      3. Process conference registrations and scholarships;
      4. Assist the conference committee with soliciting organizational, business, and institutional sponsors and underwriters;
      5. Coordinate venue and event logistics and other on-site operations;
      6. Create conference programs and other handouts;
      7. Process conference evaluations and communicate the results to the council.
    2. Education & Training Administration 15%: The Managing Director will provide administrative support for multiple online classes (both community-based and self-paced) and certifications:
      1. Process registrations and maintain enrollment records, and in certifications, progress records;
      2. Maintain online class software;
      3. Consult with classes chair to plan for future classes;
      4. Provide teachers and students with appropriate technical and logistical support;
      5. Create and distribute certificates to those who complete certifications.
    3. Financial & Office Administration 15%: The Managing Director will work closely with the council leadership.
      1. Maintain financial records, assist council with annual budgeting and reporting;
      2. File required tax documents;
      3. Track payroll and other expenses and income;
      4. Oversee risk management and legal activities: letters of agreement,    contracts, leases and other legal documents and agreements; and
      5. Ensure ongoing maintenance and updating of information systems, including the website, project management and team software, online classes, cloud-based records and documents, email newsletters, and other online and office resources.


  • Bachelor's degree required with experience in nonprofit management and  transformational language arts preferred;
  • Strong operational experience, particularly in not-for-profit organizations as staff member and/or board member;
  • Proficiency in and advanced ability to learn online software including Google Apps; Wild Apricot; Wave; WordPress; Basecamp; Mailchimp; and others as needed.
  • Experience with online marketing tools and platforms; financial record-keeping, website maintenance, Google Drive and related record-keeping;
  • Event management experience;
  • Creative problem-solving skills, including balancing demands of a diverse job;
  • Demonstrated strong communication skills in writing and editing;
  • Demonstrated graphic design skills for online and in-print promotions;
  • Capable of independently managing time and the tasks associated with a small but ambitious organization, including flexibility to switch between tasks easily;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with volunteers and governing board;
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills; and
  • Willingness to travel to the annual conference.

Timing: Job begins in July 2019 (exact date to be determined) with training tools and consultation from previous director.

Compensation: The position starts at $22/hour for 20 hours/week with potential to grow in the future. The position includes five paid vacation days (billed at eight hours per day) and up to ten unpaid vacation days annually, as arranged with Council contact in advance, and limited paid sick leave.
