Since 1959, we have been one of the nation’s leading state genealogical societies. We have four thousand members from across the United States and deliver a popular annual conference. The Society maintains a beautiful library and archives in Bellville, Ohio.
Our mission is to protect and share Ohio’s family history resources, develop engaging educational opportunities, and connect genealogists.

In consultation and coordination with the five OGS board committees (ACCESS, ENGAGE, MANAGE, TECH, FINANCE), the Managing Director manages the operations of the business of the society to ensure sustainability of OGS, meet its growth goals, and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the society consistent with the OGS mission.

• Manage finances of the society to optimize income and expenses including fundraising, grant writing, donations, accountant relations, and cost control. These responsibilities are to be conducted in consultation and coordination with the Finance Committee Chair.
• Manage membership to retain members, meet growth goals, and communicate with them. These responsibilities are to be conducted in consultation and coordination with the Engage Committee Chair.
• Manage the staff (defining and refining roles, establishing objectives and measures of their attainment, using coaching to encourage job and skill growth). Identify training needs consistent with the roles and responsibilities of employees. Effectively work with volunteers, the board, and suppliers of goods and services. These responsibilities are to be conducted in consultation and coordination with the Manage Committee Chair.
• Manage processes to attain and maintain efficiency and effectiveness of the business of the society. Help leverage technology to improve processes. These responsibilities are to be conducted in consultation and coordination with the Technology Committee Chair.
• Have oversight for the physical and digital archives of the society including the library and website. This includes ensuring that those resources are preserved, making them available and usable by members and patrons, supporting acquisitions, and leveraging resources to enhance their use. These responsibilities are to be conducted in consultation and coordination with the Library Collections Manager and the Access Committee Chair.
• Maintain, and where advisable, improves a healthy and safe environment for staff, volunteers, and patrons.
• Meet legal requirements of the society.
• Represent the society at key events and in interaction with the public and patrons.
• Identify improvements and where applicable, discuss these with the board for input to inform, and attain the board’s approval for significant changes and spending not previously approved by the board in the annual budget.
• Work with the Treasurer and Strategic Committee chairs in preparing the annual budget and communicate the monthly financial report to the board.
• Obtain support where needed from service providers and volunteers.
• Help manage the organization and overall project goals of volunteers.
• Fulfill any other requirements and objectives identified by the Board of Trustees and as directed by the President of the Board of Trustees.

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
• Five or more years of successful management experience including goal-setting and measurement, strategy formulation and implementation, balancing projects and operations.
• Three years of fundraising experience, including grant-writing, donor management, and fundraising campaigns.
• Experience may be with a for-profit business, non-profit organization, or public or academic institution. It is preferred that it be with a non-profit organization. Library or archival management experience is highly desirable.
• An interest in, and/or experience with genealogy
• Experience working with volunteers and a board
• Familiarity with the use of technology in running a society
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent communication skills
• Results-oriented
