Human Rights First is an independent advocacy and action organization that challenges America to live up to its ideals.  This mission is more critical than ever.  Fortunately, Human Rights First has cultivated a deep experience base and the reputation necessary over 40 years to take on the human rights obstacles that are likely to come.  We need to be stronger than ever to hold our leaders accountable and ensure that America becomes the beacon of human rights worldwide.
Human Rights First seeks a dynamic, ambitious and well-organized Major Gifts Officer to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward individual donors at the $5,000+ levels.  In addition to meeting with and soliciting major donors, this position manages the Board of Advocates for maximum fundraising and engagement potential. This position works collaboratively with the organization’s President & CEO and program staff to coordinate donor interactions. This position will help grow a base of major gift donors and serve as an integral member of the development team, contributing ideas, strategy, insights, contacts and operational support to advance the overall fundraising goals of the team and Human Rights First.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work in concert with Sr. Director of Development to develop a cohesive fundraising plan for small-dollar donors, annual fund, and major donors.
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 120 major gift donors and prospects, cultivating and stewarding gifts at the $5K+ levels.
  • Regularly spend time meeting with donors and prospects one-on-one primarily in the New York metro area (expectation of at least 3-5 face-to-face or pre-scheduled, substantive phone meetings per month).
  • Assess and expand the major gift prospect pool by building relationships, identifying new potential candidates and acting on data and prospect research.
  • Develop and execute an engagement strategy for the Board of Advocates to achieve maximum potential.
  • Conceive of and execute (in coordination with the development and communications teams) a calendar of cultivation and stewardship events that engage donors and prospects in the organization’s mission and program in strategically viable markets around the country; this will allow opportunities for national travel as appropriate.
  • Manage outreach and engagement for the annual Awards Dinner Host Committee.
  • Support the Senior Director of Development in managing development-related Board communications, solicitations, and stewardship events and trips.
  • Monitor closely and meet monthly and quarterly fundraising goals.
  • Utilize and update the Raisers Edge donor database by recording activities, contacts, and strategies on an on-going basis consistent with department requirements.
  • Other duties as requested based on department and/or organizational need

  • Polish and professionalism to interact with donors, senior management and other external contacts (Board Members and Board of Advocates members) on the phone, in person, and in various forms of correspondence
