Position Summary

As part of the Tides mission to accelerate the pace of social change, the Director, Grants is responsible for leading the strategy and oversight of grants management at Tides. The position will also manage a team of grants administrators and specialists, ensuring regulatory compliance and streamlined processing for all aspects of Tides’ grantmaking process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Management

· Manages a team of 5-6 grants specialists and administrators to achieve organizational objectives, delegating responsibility and providing leadership within and on behalf of the team

· Responsible for the professional and individual development of team members; identifies opportunities for team members to attain additional skills and knowledge that contribute to successful achievement of goals

· Oversees special projects on behalf of team, including working cross-departmentally and collaborating with other department leaders· Represents Grants Team at leadership meetings and offsite events

· Analyses and synthesizes data; reports to the General Counsel, Board and CEO on grantmaking numbers, patterns, and issues

· Provides strategic insight into mission, process and policy improvements

· Designs and oversees training for Grants team as well as other stakeholders on grants process and compliance

Planning

· Directs strategic planning efforts and establishes annual department plan and budget in connection with organization’s strategic goals

· Assesses external grant-making landscape, identifies trends, and proposes recommendations to Executive Leadership team on how Tides can best position itself in the field

· Works with cross-departmental teams to manage year-end planning and grants flow

Grantmaking Policy, Compliance, and Process

· Provides oversight and information for processing and compliance of approximately 5,000 domestic and international grants

· Collaborates with Legal team to ensure grantmaking is compliant and resolve compliance inquiries

· Oversees review and approval of grants, ensuring appropriate process and providing responsive support as issues arise

· Leads the team in continually streamlining and improving operational processes and staying in compliance with relevant grantmaking regulations

· Oversees and maintains grants policies and support documents

· Advises and implements changes to policy and procedure to enhance effectiveness of grantmaking program

· Collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate IRS reporting

Client Service

· Identifies new and improved service offerings that would benefit Tides and its partners

· Provides quality and timely client services for both internal and external clients

· Collaborates with client services team to ensure effective support of grantmaking partners

· Works closely with Strategic Partnerships team to ensure consistent and streamlined client on-boarding

· Consults on clients’ development of grantmaking programs and best practices

· Oversees and manages responses to external data requests

Systems

· Develops and optimizes grants processes and works cross-departmentally to integrate

· Leads and participates in cross-functional work groups to ensure continued success of operations of grants management system

· Designs, implements and maintains grants management software that aligns with current and potential processes as well as the needs of other departments and external partners

· Leads team efforts to continuously maintain and improve grants management software

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Grants Management

· Strong understanding of and experience working with donor advised funds and international grants and regulations/considerations associated with both

· Knowledge and application of best practices in grantmaking, including rules and regulations, Expenditure Responsibility, lobbying, and electoral issues

· Knowledge and experience working with grants management software and relational databases (SalesForce experience strongly preferred)

· Strong knowledge of Excel (VLookups, pivot tables, and intermediate-level functions), Microsoft Office

Management and Communications

· Exceptional people management skills; ability to manage, support and develop direct reports

· Ability to effectively communicate technical and process-related details to staff, grantees, and clients

· Ability to design and implement effective workflow processes and procedures

· Capability to foster an atmosphere that recognizes and respects cultural and individual differences; ability to motivate and maintain a close-knit, high functioning team

· Strong organizational skills with careful attention to detail

· Ability to function in a fast-paced work environment and to adjust to competing priorities

· Ability to work with a variety of clients and partners, including corporations, grassroots organizers, foundations, and others

· Ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally, while maintaining leadership and ownership of Grants function

· Adaptable and open to change

· Ability to hold self and others accountable for high-quality, timely, and effective results

Education and Experience

· Undergraduate degree required

· 5 years of experience in a similar management position, preferably in the nonprofit sector

· At least 6 years of grants administration in a philanthropic or other grant-making institution, including experience with and/or demonstrated knowledge about donor advised funds and international grantmaking
