Position Overview

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for creating a diverse & equitable agency for staff and program participants while staying true to the mission, vision, and values. The ED builds and maintains a collaborative and safe culture for all employees and program participants to reach individual and collective goals.

The Executive Director leads day-to-day operations of the agency, including but not limited to:

  • Being critical to fundraising needed for a $2.5 million annual budget.
  • Providing input on effective & innovative programs to end family homelessness.
  • Representing The Road Home (TRH) in the community.
  • Networking with other community leaders.
  • Managing director-level positions.
  • Ensuring effective and efficient operations.
  • Being an open, honest and transparent liaison between the staff and the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities

Manage the Leadership Team

  • Collaborate with the Development Director to raise awareness of The Road Home’s mission and ensure financial sustainability.
  • Assure the acquisition and management of resources necessary to ensure that the financial operations of The Road Home are conducted.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources to make all hiring decisions, including benefits and employee well-being.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Director to ensure efficient & effective processes for staff.
  • Promote an organizational culture that fosters a passion for the mission, cooperation, open and frequent communication, and teamwork while encouraging the expression of individual gifts and skills in pursuit of a collaborative organization vision.

External Partnerships and Public Relations

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with other stakeholders and potential revenue sources, including but not limited to the City of Madison, Dane County, Dept. of Housing & Urban Development, and United Way of Dane County.
  • Lead by example and encourage staff to be actively involved in systems change, primarily through the Homeless Services Consortium and policy advocacy.
  • Support volunteer efforts with businesses, organizations, the faith community, and individuals.
  • Represent the agency in the media.
  • Ensure partnerships with a variety of organizations to produce equitable services.

Strategic Direction of the Agency

  • Stay informed of nationally recognized best practices to end family homelessness.
  • Think critically about internal and external opportunities and threats.
  • Make decisions about maximizing limited resources with the greatest impact.
  • Oversee an organizational structure that ensures that programmatic objectives are aligned with the mission and are supported by finances, facilities, internal and external communication, and/or mutually beneficial partnerships.
  • Ensure data collection, analysis, and reporting to show the reach and impact of programs and to support continuous improvement to programming consistent with The Road Home’s mission.

Fundraising

  • Provide leadership in fundraising planning and implementation.
  • Establish and cultivate a portfolio of major funders, donors, and prospects.
  • In collaboration with the Development Director and Development Team, identify resource needs, research funding sources, establish strategies to approach donors, review and contribute content to proposals and oversee fundraising records, documentation, and stewardship.
  • Collaborate with Development Team to determine targeted messaging for donors, volunteers and partners on the strategies for reducing and eliminating family homelessness, the barriers families face in securing and maintaining housing, and the need for financial support to move more families from homelessness to housing.
  • Play a lead role in the annual fundraising event.
  • Create an atmosphere of fund development within the organization where all staff feel they play a role.

Administration

  • Develop, recommend and manage the annual operating budget in consultation with third party accounting firm and the Finance and Investment committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Enter upon contract agreements for the agency and uphold contract expectations.
  • Oversee programming and services in partnership with the leadership team to stay informed about ways newer technology can support staff and participants; strive to use technology that will better support their work.

Liaison to Board of Directors

  • Communicate regularly with Board President and committee chairs and provide timely and accurate information and reporting necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed strategic decisions.
  • Actively participate in monthly Board meetings by helping set agenda, arranging for guest speakers, and other tasks as needed.
  • Attend meetings and maintain working knowledge of the Board and committee activities.
  • Guide, support, and serve the Board of Directors in establishing goals and executing initiatives designed to fulfill the mission of The Road Home.
  • Harness the wealth of talent and the collective knowledge of Board members to serve the mission of The Road Home creatively and proactively

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Desired

  • The Road Home is seeking an individual who brings significant and proven leadership skills developed through at least four years of experience working with populations who have been systematically oppressed, and at least two years in a management position. Candidate’s experience can include work in a non-profit, for-profit, or government organization.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university desired.
  • Ability to foster a healthy organization culture, to encourage teamwork and collaboration, strong interpersonal skills that include the ability to inspire and motivate, effective at conflict management.
  • Demonstrated and sincere passion for the mission of The Road Home with the ability to articulate the mission across all key stakeholder groups (e.g. staff, business and philanthropic communities, local and regional government officials, community leaders, the general public and the media).
  • Ability to move seamlessly among staff, volunteers, Board members, funders, community members and the families served by The Road Home.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors or other governing body.
  • Demonstrated success in generating revenue through a variety of fundraising techniques, including experience with major gifts solicitation, planned giving, annual campaigns, special events, and grant proposals.
  • Financial and operational acumen; direct experience with budget development/management and P&L oversight.
  • Proven skills in developing and implementing strategic plans.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, strong presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated success working with diverse perspectives and groups.
  • A goal-oriented, compassionate, visionary leader who possesses the creativity and drive necessary to build upon and expand the success and impact of this organization.
  • Experience with housing-related work, desired.
