Medicine Horse (www.medicinehorse.org) is a small,(3 staff, 4 horses) 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of adolescents, families, and adults through unique equine-assisted experiences. We provide group and individual psychotherapy sessions that focus on mental health and healing, using our program horses and mini-donkeys.  We’ve been serving the community for 22 years.

Annual Compensation: $50,000 to $70,000  Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, time in role, base salary of internal peers, prior performance, business sector, and geographic location. 

 

Signing Bonus:  $2500 on first day  of employment, $2500 at the successful completion of the first 90 days.

 

Schedule & Benefits:

  • Self-determined schedule that will include some evenings, weekends. Hybrid work location.
  • 2 weeks paid vacation per year

 

Education:

  • Bachelor's (Preferred)

Experience:

  • Nonprofit management:  5 years (Preferred)
  • Change management: 2 years (Preferred)
  • Work in the mental health or healthcare field (Preferred)

 

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs and strategic plan of Medicine Horse. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. Reporting to the Board of Directors, this position will  manage and direct the day-to-day operations of Medicine Horse, that specifically include collaborating with therapists (who are independent contractors), managing a small staff, monitoring and ensuring the level of care for Medicine Horse animals (with support), and interfacing with the community.

 

The Executive Director must possess organizational leadership skills including being persuasive, collaborative, fair, and accountable. Leadership must be focused on the core ethics of collaboration, enhancing mental health  and the drive for excellence to ensure that the best practices and services as well as the Medicine Horse culture are being delivered to those we serve.  The Executive Director must be very comfortable around horses and able to participate in basic care training if not experienced.

 

Honesty, integrity, and the ability to maintain confidentiality are a must, along with a high commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion on all fronts.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

What we require:

  • A proven track record of building and/or maintaining a successful organization (preferably nonprofit) in an environment that utilizes strong communication, fiduciary, collaboration and business management skills.
  • Experience with managing a profit and loss in a non-profit setting; ability to read and react to profit and loss statements/balance sheets
  • General knowledge of grant writing and reporting
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills
  • Excellent networking, oral and written communication skills
  • Intermediate experience with Gmail, Slack, social media, Microsoft Office, Google Drive
  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience
  • Highly organized: able to manage multiple assignments to meet project deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal communication and collaboration skills
  • Physical qualifications include the ability to climb and descend stairs, and to lift boxes weighing 40 lbs. without assistance. Ability to work in a farm environment that may include dust, fluctuating temperatures, animals
  • Must pass criminal background check

  • Experience working successfully with a Board of Directors
