Justice For Our Neighbors Houston provides low income individuals and families in the greater Houston area with affordable, high quality immigration legal services and engages in immigration and advocacy. Additional information can be found at www.jfonhouston.org.

The Justice for Our Neighbor Ministry program, founded in 1999 by the United Methodist Committee on Relief, has served thousands of immigrants throughout the United States. The National JFON office supports 19 JFON sites throughout the country, which collectively employ more than 30 immigration attorneys. These sites operate in 14 states and Washington, D.C., and include approximately 50 clinics that operate out of United Methodist churches and other locations. RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Executive Director (ED) serves as the primary leader, external champion, and internal manager of JFON Houston.

Reporting to the board of directors, the ED is responsible for providing the overall leadership necessary for JFON Houston to achieve its mission. With a focus on implementing the strategic goals and objectives of the organization, the ED provides direction, leadership, and strategic management relating to program, funding, and community development. The ED takes an active role in supporting and retaining outstanding staff and building a culture focused on service and empowerment.

The ED represents the organization within the local community and before local government by establishing and maintaining relationships with, and aligning, major local internal and external stakeholders, including the staff team, board members, volunteers, churches, other service organizations, and immigrant civic groups, as well as foundations and private sector funders.

DUTIES:

Leadership and Management:

  • Oversees administration of the organization; provides overall leadership and management of its day-to-day affairs.

  • Ensures that the organization and its mission, programs, and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive manner to stakeholders.

  • Works with the board of directors, the executive committee, and other board committees, to refine the strategic direction of the organization and to develop specific action plans to achieve agreed-upon strategic objectives.

  • Recruits, hires, develops, retains, inspires and motivates a diverse and high performing team.

  • Provides support and oversight to the volunteer teams.

  • Limited travel and some weekend hours required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by Board Chair.

Resource Development and Financial Management:

  • Acts as the chief fundraising agent for the organization, including proposal and grant writing.

  • Maintains a consistent stream of revenues adequate to fund the organization’s activities and programs.

  • Ensures that effective internal financial management systems and controls for the protection of organization assets are established and maintained; ensures compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations regarding the means by which organizational revenues are generated and are reported and accounted for.

  • Engages board members and volunteers in fundraising efforts; provides training opportunities as needed.

Program Development:

  • Provides leadership in advancing the mission of the organization as established by the board of directors.

  • Ensures that the organization develops and implements an effective, high-quality strategy for transformative service that meets the needs of the organization’s diverse constituents and aligns with the JFON network-wide service model.

  • Regularly assesses the effectiveness of the organization’s programs and identifies new opportunities to increase the capacity of the organization in servicing clients.

Community Representation and Advocacy:

  • Acts as the principal spokesperson for the organization.

  • Works regularly across the community, county, and state, establishing key positive partnerships and representing the organization and the immigrant community in general.

  • Engages in community education about basic immigration issues and immigrants’ legal rights.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  Required:

  • High level of organizational and political sophistication, especially as relates to connecting programs to funding, creatively generating other resources, and building collaborative and strategic partnerships.

  • Proven skills and experience in fundraising and proposal/grant writing; ability to meet annual and quarterly revenue goals; a “closer.”

  • Successful management background with experience in nonprofit financial development.

  • Ability to manage growth: strategic planning, organizational development, capacity-building, and performance assessment.

  • Strong passion for and commitment to the mission of Houston/East Texas JFON and the legal rights of immigrants.

  • Experience working with a board of directors or other governing body.

  • Team player with the ability to lead by influence and build consensus.

  • Proven ability to work with people of varying religious, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds.

  • Outstanding written and oral communication, listening, and presentation skills.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher. Ideal candidate will have demonstrated commitment to working in the public interest in immigration or related areas.

  • At least intermediate knowledge of issues affecting the immigrant communities in the Houston area.

    Preferred:

  • Ability to effectively communicate in Spanish.

  • Strong financial management experience.

  • Immigration legal experience.
