Executive Director Search

The Sixteenth Century Society seeks an Executive Director to serve as the chief administrative officer of the Society. The Sixteenth Century Society is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the study of the Early Modern Era (ca. 1450- 1750). The Society hosts a dynamic conference each year, where senior, junior, and future colleagues of all early modern disciplines meet to present their work, discuss new trends in the profession, and develop the contacts that are crucial for scholars and students. The ED is a member of the Society’s Executive Committee and reports directly to the Society’s President.

The Primary Responsibilities of this part-time position include:

  • Planning, in cooperation with the Executive Committee and the Program Committee, the Annual Meeting held in late October of each year. (Negotiating contracts with conference venues and vendors; coordinating conference budget and logistics; producing and distributing the program; managing registration, communicate between the site and the Society, etc).

  • Working with the Financial Officer to manage the financial affairs of the Society, oversee the endowment, facilitate the audit, and produce the budget.

  • Overseeing and facilitating the Society’s various digital platforms with the Technology Officer and Social Media Officer (including website and social media, and conference program application).

  • Handling correspondence and inquiries from members.

  • Supporting the work of the Council’s committees, prize committees and organizing the awards ceremony.

  • Engaging with the Sixteenth Century Journal Editors and liaising with the publishers as necessary.

  • Representing the Society at the bi-annual meetings of the American Council of Learned Societies.

  • Maintaining the Society’s records and archives.

The ideal applicant should have an understanding of the work of an academic society and a strong commitment to the Sixteenth Century Society’s mission. We especially encourage inquires and applications from candidates with the following skills, qualifications, and experience:

  • Excellent administrative, management, and leadership skills (preferably academic or not-for-profit in nature).

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, and a commitment to teamwork.

  • Experience with budgeting, financial statements, and fundraising.

  • Excellent computer skills.

This is a paid part-time position. Salary range is $15,000 to $20,000 depending on experience. Travel is included, but there are no other benefits offered. Due to the nature of the position, for those holding an academic appointment, tenure is strongly desired. One need not have an academic appointment to apply. A criminal background check will be required for the person hired.

Term of service is six years and may be renewed.

The position shall begin on 1 January 2024.
