ABOUT THE CENTER FOR INDEPENDENCE OF INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES (CID)

CID's mission is to provide support services, community awareness, and systems change advocacy to promote full and equal community integration and participation for people with disabilities.

The Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities (CID) is a private, nonprofit corporation located in San Mateo, California. Incorporated in 1979, CID is a consumer-driven, community-based, services and advocacy organization serving San Mateo County and beyond. By federal mandate, the majority of CID’s Staff, Management, and Board of Directors consists of people with disabilities.

Annually, CID provides direct and indirect services to more than 2,000 individuals with disabilities.

CID is one of 25 Independent Living Centers in the State of California and over 400 Independent Living Centers in the United States. We are affiliated with other ILCs through our membership and participation in the California Foundation of Independent Living Centers and the National Council on Independent Living. CID is affiliated with other nonprofit agencies through our membership in the California Association of Non-Profits.

THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ROLE

The Executive Director acts as a Chief Executive Officer of an organization and is responsible for the overall management and direction of CID in accordance with its mission. The Executive Director works under the general oversight of the Board of Directors. Specific duties include the planning, vision, and leadership for all aspects of CID, such as programs and services, finance, resource development, human resources, communications, strategic focus, and board development. The Board is looking for an Executive Director who has a positive team approach to management, integrity, is mission-driven, and cares about their work. CID has an annual operating budget of approximately two-million-dollars and a staff of 20 employees. The Executive Director reports to CID’s Board of Directors and will be based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Responsibilities:

1. Support and work with the Board of Directors

  • Assure that CID operates with a clear mission and a strategic plan that is consistent with the mission.
  • Work with board members, representatives of other Independent Living Centers and collaborating partners, both locally and state-wide, to strengthen CID’s capacity to provide resources and support for the disability community.
  • Keep the Board of Directors fully informed on conditions, opportunities, issues, and challenges for CID and the environment in which it operates so that the Board can carry out its governance, financial oversight, and leadership role.
  • Develop with the Board of Directors, on a yearly basis, a work plan for the board to carry forward the strategic plans of CID.
  • Attend all Board Committee Meetings unless otherwise directed.

2. Office Management

  • Develop a yearly work plan with staff which includes goals, objectives, key performance metrics and programmatic deliverables.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with outside vendors, community partner organizations, funders, and individual donors.
  • Represent the organization in negotiations with contractors.
  • Effectively manage the human resources of CID to support an environment respectful of personal well-being and cultural diversity. This includes hiring and terminating personnel and resolving grievances and/or conflicts.
  • Must have the ability to train, coach and mentor staff.
  • Ensure program quality and consistency of organizational goals through ongoing evaluation of all programs and services to determine both effectiveness and client satisfaction.
  • Ensure official records and documents are maintained in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

3. Finance and Fundraising

  • Develop an annual budget and fundraising plan and submit to the board for approval.
  • Develop relationships and maintain regular communication with CID’s funders, in both the municipal and private sectors.
  • Identify and develop proposals for new grant opportunities.
  • Ensure that the required funding reporting practices and deadlines are being followed.
  • Work with the Board of Directors in the execution of CID’s annual audit.
  • Ensure CID is in full compliance with all non-profit accounting practices and that appropriate financial controls and risk-management strategies are in place to protect CID’s assets.
  • Manage CID’s agency brand and marketing presence.

4. Develop and Coordinate Advocacy Efforts

  • Develop relationships with local, state and national organizations involved in Disability Advocacy and Independent Living.
  • Attend Executive Director State-Wide Independent Living Conferences.
  • Maintain and advance CID’s reputation as a leader in Independent Living programs as well as service delivery in San Mateo County and beyond.
  • Administer the development and coordination of events, programs, conferences, workshops, publications, and agency website.
  • Oversee relationships with third-party service providers.
  • Serve as the lead spokesperson for CID and ensure that the organization’s mission is properly presented to the public.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nonprofit Management, Public Policy or equivalent; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 5+ years senior Nonprofit Management experience.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities and understanding of the Disability Social Justice and/or Independent Living Movements.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with and reporting to a Board of Directors.
  • Supervisory and personnel management experience.
  • Strong ability to execute operational goals.
  • Fundraising skills and experience.
  • Experience running a successful capital campaign.
  • Strong public speaking and advocacy skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual/bicultural experience.
  • Management experience in a social service setting.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

CID’s Executive Director Salary Range is $150,000-$170,000. This is a full-time exempt position. In addition to the base salary, this leadership position offers competitive benefits for the non-profit sector.
