Organizational Background

The Association for the Treatment and Prevention of Sexual Abuse, also known as the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (www.atsa.com) is a global-reach nonprofit with a mission to prevent sexual abuse through effective assessment, evidence-based treatment, and management of individuals at risk to sexually abuse. ATSA utilizes sound research, education, and informed public policy to accomplish its goals and mission. ATSA is an international, multi-disciplinary organization dedicated to making society safer by preventing sexual abuse.

ATSA was organized by a group of Oregon-based clinicians and researchers in the early 1980’s who began meeting together and eventually incorporated as a nonprofit in 1985 under the leadership of a volunteer Board of Directors, with codified values and a Code of Ethics. ATSA hosted its first conference in 1987 and has grown into an international organization with over 3,000 members in over 20 countries. ATSA also publishes the scientific journal Sexual Abuse. The organization, headquartered in Portland, Oregon, is governed by a national/international volunteer Board of Directors, and has an annual budget of $1.3 million staffed by 6 full-time employees. The Board of Directors is comprised of expert clinicians and researchers from across the field of specialized treatment of sexual abuse.

Position Summary

This position could be structured as remote, hybrid or in person. If remote there is an expectation for attendance at regular in-office meetings in Portland, Oregon. The Executive Director of ATSA has a wide range of mission-focused responsibilities, providing executive leadership to a growing, dynamic organization. The Executive Director reports to and communicates with the Board of directors in a continuous, ongoing manner while providing overall management and oversight of the day-to-day operations of the organization. The position supervises 5 direct reports and oversees the various executive functions which include responding to and supporting the organization’s committees and the needs of ATSA’s membership. The Executive Director oversees the communication with the public and various individuals/groups requesting information from ATSA’s extensive expertise regarding the treatment and prevention of sexual abuse. The Executive Director actively works to outreach, connect, and build relationships and collaborative partnerships with key organizations and stakeholders across North America and around the world. The Executive Director is continuously seeking creative ways of increasing levels of membership in ATSA through electronic and printed communications in all forms, including the distribution of the journal Sexual Abuse, and through attendance and participation in ATSA’s annual conference attracting over 2,000 attendees from across the world.

Responsibilities

The ATSA Executive Director’s responsibilities include:

  • Works closely with ATSA Board leadership in the development of visionary strategies, enhancing organizational growth and the societal impact of its vision and mission.
  • Directs implementation of policies established by the Board of Directors in support of the organization’s mission.
  • Oversees, manages, and directs day-to-day operations of the organization, including programmatic growth and development.
  • Oversees, supervises, and evaluates day-to-day responsibilities of the ATSA staff, including evaluation of human resource needs, employment processes using nondiscriminatory practices, and supporting the needs of staff in all forms of professional growth and development.
  • Oversees the development, preparation, and continuous analysis of the ATSA operational budget and cash flow status in collaboration with the Board of Directors, including long term investment strategies.
  • Responsibility for fiscal integrity, including compliance with all grant funded requirements and maintenance of a positive organizational financial position.
  • Manages development of new grants and annual grant renewals; nurture and grow donor and stakeholder relationships to increase financial support.
  • Engages in ongoing relationship with ATSA membership and oversee communication between the membership community and ATSA staff.
  • Drives fiscal operations to achieve organizational funding goals as determined by the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Works closely with the Board leadership in the establishment, management, and staffing of the various volunteer-run committees of the organization.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of all aspects of the annual conference, including contract negotiations, vendor participation, speakers’ accommodations, and staff/volunteer responsibilities.
  • Oversees the responsibilities included in the development, publication, and distribution of the organization’s scientific journal, Sexual Abuse.
  • Develops strategies in collaboration with Board, staff, and current membership for ongoing, growth of ATSA membership from both a North American and global perspective.
  • Facilitates and participates in communicating the organization’s mission with various stakeholders both clinical and consumer communities, organizations, and government.

Professional Qualifications and Personal Characteristics or Attributes

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree, with Master’s degree, MBA, MPA, and/or CAE preferred, with extensive nonprofit management, professional organization and/or business management experience.
  • Diversity awareness and effective communication skills with diverse groups and communities.
  • Ability to bring visionary new ideas supporting organizational growth and development.
  • Comfort and experience working with a dynamic, highly engaged and invested Board of Directors with global membership.
  • Significant experience in organizational finance leadership.
  • Ability to publicly represent and advocate issues related to the treatment and prevention of sexual abuse.
  • Demonstrated experience in fund development.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience managing and motivating staff and volunteer teams in a remote environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the clinicians, researchers, professional partners, and media.
  • Familiarity with the development and planning of professional conferences.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range $135,000 to $160,000 commensurate with experience and other qualifications. Benefits include 100% coverage for employee medical, dental and vision, with 12% organizational contribution to SEP after 90 days of starting, 20 days annual PTO, and 8 paid annual holidays.
