Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) seeks an experienced Elementary School Art Teacher to teach a thorough introductory visual arts curriculum to local Harlem students from our neighboring school in third, fourth, and fifth grades between September 2022 and March 2023.

This opportunity is part of HSA’s Community Outreach program, in which we partner with schools and community organizations to provide arts programming to students who may not otherwise have access.

Job Summary:

The Elementary School Art Teacher must have demonstrated early childhood teaching experience in school or community organization settings. Successful candidates will enjoy working with young children, be equipped with excellent classroom management skills in classrooms of up to eighteen students, have formal experience in arts education, and be eager to cultivate relationships within a diverse, multicultural community.  A strong understanding of art learning standards and experience adapting curriculum for early childhood age groups is required.  Experience in public school classrooms is a strong plus.

With close support from the HSA team, the Elementary School Art Teacher will be responsible for effectively teaching HSA’s introductory visual arts curriculum for students in third through fifth grades. The position starts in September 2022 and ends in late March 2023 with the potential for renewal each school year. Hour-long classes occur three times a week on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons (schedule subject to change). No classes are held during school breaks as determined by the partner school’s holiday schedule. Classes take place in HSA’s large, sunny, and well-equipped art classroom. This is a part-time, non-exempt position.

 

The ideal candidate will be:

  • An experienced school teacher comfortable with groups of up to 18 students
  • Engaging in their teaching methods, yielding quality student work
  • Confident in busy, non-traditional classroom settings
  • Highly experienced in classroom management techniques
  • Collaborative and cooperative, with an interest in interdisciplinary learning and shared goals
  • Organized, reliable, well-prepared, and consistent

 

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years’ experience teaching students in a school or community setting
  • Extensive training in the arts
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience; Master’s Degree a plus
  • Demonstrated experience delivering high quality instruction to children
  • Experience creating developmentally appropriate sequential lesson plans
  • Ability to assess progress and success of students and adapt as needed (in teaching style, materials, equipment, and, sequencing)

 

Location:

Harlem School of the Arts is located at 645 Saint Nicholas Avenue, New York, NY 10030. The school is easily accessible via the A, C, B, and D subway trains to 145th Street. Teaching locations may be at Harlem School of the Arts or at other community and school locations in Upper Manhattan.
