American Humane is seeking an experienced Director of Planned Giving to help support American Humane major gifts programs and fundraising initiatives. This position will be fully remote. American Humane is committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. Position summary:  

The Director, Planned Giving will manage the critical operational components of our planned giving program.  This includes multi-channel marketing efforts, providing timely responses and follow-up to planned giving inquiries, and ensuring stewardship of Legacy Society donors.  The Director, Planned Giving will also lead efforts to secure more blended gifts and manage the administration of realized estate gifts from donors who have included American Humane in their will or other estate plans.

Responsibilities:

Marketing, Donor Relations & Stewardship

  • Create and manage multi-channel planned giving (PG) marketing and communications strategies meeting agreed number of new planned gift intentions and inquiries annually.
  • Manage the information fulfillment, follow-up, qualification and closing cycle on planned giving leads from all sources.
  • Lead the development and implementation of special fundraising campaigns, such as gift annuities, stock, IRA charitable rollover, legacy challenge, and DAF/community foundation giving campaigns, including development of online tools and resources and production of education and promotional materials across multiple channels.
  • Plan and implement prospect/donor educational seminars in-person and virtually, focused on planned giving for deepening relationships and building a pipeline for cultivation.
  • Empower gift officers to identify prospects, craft customized asks, close blended gifts, steward, and retain planned giving commitments within their portfolios. Offer basic education on planned giving vehicles and support development of long-range donor strategies.
  • Update donor details in our database ensuring any planned gift inquiry or new gift intention is entered in a timely manner and coded based on established procedures.
  • Produce and analyze quarterly marketing program reports on inquiries generated from various sources, leads closed, total donor interactions and other established metrics.
  • Identify and manage stewardship and engagement opportunities for Legacy Society members, bringing visibility and recognition to the group, while maintaining gift commitments.

Estate and CGA Administration:

  • Responsible for ongoing communication with law firms, trust officers, and executors of open estates, to estimate distribution timelines and gift amounts for revenue and pledge projections against budgeted goals.
  • Interpret wills, trusts, notices, petitions, pleadings, and other correspondence to determine charity’s interest. Identify areas of concern for legal team or outside counsel involvement as necessary.
  • Review documents and coordinate with legal and finance departments to obtain required approvals and signatures.
  • Coordinate regulatory compliance and overall operations of gift annuity program and partners, including gift annuity fund administrators and internal finance and legal departments.
  • Ensure smooth CGA proposal and gift contract issuance process with donors, finance and legal teams, and external CGA administrators.
  • Manage vendor relationships with CGA administrator, planned giving website vendor, state regulation consultants, and calculation software provider.

Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree required and 3+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills; must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent judgment, discretion, and diplomacy.
  • Experience working cooperatively and collaboratively as a member of a team as well as independently with self-direction and ability to meet timelines.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized; able to manage multiple projects and prioritize appropriately while maintaining disciplined adherence to program goals.
  • An understanding of current laws regarding taxability of donations and familiarity with deferred giving strategies is essential.
  • Must be knowledgeable of industry trends and best practices for marketing and communicating with gift planning audiences.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with particular emphasis in Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Understanding of additional software, including, but not limited to, Raiser’s Edge or other CRM and PG Calc or Crescendo.

Physical demands and work environment: 

  • Position may be remotely based, but may require occasional trips to the Washington, DC or Palm Beach, FL office locations as needed.
  • Must be comfortable being around animals, in particular dogs, in the office and at events.
  • Minimal travel may be required for work events or donor-related meetings.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee will be regularly required to:
    • Sit for extended periods;
    • Look at and work off of a computer screen for extended periods;
    • Talk, hear and exchange information over the telephone, computer and in person.
