Common Justice develops and advances solutions to violence that transforms the lives of those harmed and foster racial equity without relying on incarceration. Locally, we operate the first alternative-to-incarceration and victim-service programs in the United States to focus on violent felonies in adult courts. Nationally, we leverage the lessons from our direct service to transform the justice system through partnerships, advocacy, and elevating the experience and power of those most impacted. Common Justice knows that communities impacted by crime and violence—and crime survivors in particular—have essential expertise about what produces safety, what constitutes accountability, and what facilitates healing. Common Justice’s organizing and policy work aims to lay the foundation for the long haul, building the relationships and resources necessary to shift power and secure transformative change.

Common Justice is seeking an experienced Organizing Director who can help the organization win transformative racial justice campaigns that are grounded in the needs of survivors of violence, formerly incarcerated people, and others impacted by violence. The ideal candidate can create effective campaign strategies designed to build a large base, develop leaders, and center the voices and wisdom of those most impacted by interpersonal, community, and state violence. This person should be committed to Common Justice’s mission and able to thrive in a fast-paced and evolving work environment, and have a great sense of humor.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead and manage a growing organizing team to:

• Build a grassroots member base of survivors of violence, those adversely impacted by the criminal legal system, and allies;
• Work with members to identify issues that impact them and create action plans that raise public awareness of those issues and/or impact policy change;
• Work with our Policy Team to develop campaign strategies and plans that effectuate short term, as well as long term policy change for our members;
• Work with our Communications Team to highlight and uplift members stories and profile in the media;
• Identify and develop leaders within Common Justice’s member base and provide those leaders with the tools and resources they need to successfully advocate for the issues that impact them;
• Work with Common Justice’s partnership, replication and training team to create workshops and training for members on restorative justice and transformative justice models;
• Create and provide members with relevant political education, including workshops on non-carceral solutions to violence, how to conduct a power analysis, legislative and electoral policy, and other key topics;
• Build partnerships and coalitions with groups that are values aligned and share similar movement, policy and/or organizing goals;
• Represent the organization in meetings with policy makers, allies, and

 Job Requirements:

• A minimum of ten years of organizing and advocacy experience;
• A familiarity with and commitment to the issues that are central to Common Justice’s work, including criminal justice reform, ending mass incarceration, and the rights and needs of crime survivors;
• Experience in both grassroots and digital organizing;
• At least 4 years of managing (supervising) a team.
• A record of developing targeted issue campaigns that are aligned with Common Justice's mission to end mass incarceration;
• Experience training and developing staff and members in organizing, and community advocacy;
• Great writing, presentation, and oral communication skills, as well as an ability to synthesize and translate complicated information into clear, compelling language;
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot issues as they arise, make contingency plans, and shift plans as needed;
• Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to think creatively and innovatively;
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments;
• Demonstrated commitment to working with a racial equity lens;
• Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks;
• Willingness to travel as needed;
• A good sense of humor.

Salary is commensurate with experience within Common Justice’s pay range of $128,000-$134,000 for a Director level position. A competitive benefits package is provided, including medical, dental, life, long-term disability insurance, retirement 401 (k), and substantial vacation.
