Summary of Position:

The Director of Finance is responsible for budgeting and financial reporting, developing and maintaining accounting practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with regulatory requirements for funders, nonprofit organizations and contracting entities. The Director of Finance is responsible for general ledger management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, funder’s reports, audit preparation, and closing at month-end, year-end, and grant year-end. The Director of Finance will supervise fiscal management staff to ensure work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. This position addresses tight deadlines and will have contact with senior-level managers, Officers, and funders, which requires strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal. The ideal candidate will directly oversee and manage the organization’s budget, cash flow and audit process, as well as prepare financial statements and maintain strong relationships with funders. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees all aspects of the general ledger accounting;
  • Supervises the accounting department, works with each team member to develop goals, conducts regular check-in meetings, and provides regular feedback and support, as well as annual performance reviews;
  • Manages cash balances, investments, and banking relationships;
  • Oversees the 401k year-end reporting and tax return preparations;
  • Leads annual financial audit process, and coordinates and prepares all documentation and schedules as required by external auditor, including Single Audit requirements;
  • Oversees and reviews the month-end and year-end close-out processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, grant reports, taxes, and contract invoicing;
  • Prepares the monthly revenue analysis and oversees the monthly journal entry;
  • Works with COO to produce cash flow analyses and forecasts;
  • With the Payroll and Benefits Administrator, responsible for the bi-weekly disbursement of payroll including garnishments, benefits, and taxes consistent with federal and state wage and hour laws;
  • Assists with the creation and implementation of the annual budget;
  • Performs regular projections and assists with budget modifications as needed;
  • Participates in regular meetings with program leadership, provides financial reports, and serves as liaison between programs and finance;
  • Analyzes key vendor relationships to ensure maximum cost savings;
  • Works in conjunction with the Director of Programs to ensure that grants and contracts are maximized and program staff are kept apprised of grant and contract financial performance;
  • Compiles financial data and prepares monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for the CEO, COO and Board of Directors, including key indicators and narrative; and
  • Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars and performs other related duties, as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Experience and Skills:              

  • B.A. or B.S. degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA or Masters Degree in Accounting or Finance, highly preferred.
  • Five or more years accounting experience in financial reporting, forecasting, budgeting, audit prep, preferably all with nonprofit organizations.  Minimum of two years recent experience in a non-profit agency.
  • At least three years of experience supervising accounting staff.
  • Must have thorough knowledge and experience implementing GAAP and strong internal controls; knowledge of non-profit government funded accounting and Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards.
  • Experience with accounting software programs and Microsoft Office is required. Knowledge of fund accounting systems, a plus. Familiarity with relational database structures, and use of complex accounting data in a business environment.
  • Excellent analytical ability and process development skills.
  • Must have strong multi-tasking and organizational skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
  • Requires excellent customer relations skills and be able to communicate effectively with all levels of management and technical professionals.

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to use sound judgment.   Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.  Must be punctual, dependable, and responsive to supervision. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing and scheduling work assignments.  Skill in developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.

Physical:                  

Must be able to lift and carry small loads (up to 25 lbs.) and stand for prolonged hours. 

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT AND BENEFITS:

This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary that is commensurate with education and experience.  The organization offers employer-paid family medical, dental, and vision benefits with a 15% employee contribution, option to participate in a 4% employer-matched 401(k) retirement plan, and generous paid leave including holidays, vacation, and sick leave.  This position requires the candidate to be available for work Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM.
