About Southampton Hospital Foundation

A campus of Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital offers a diverse array of clinical services, ranging from primary medical care to specialized surgical procedures, including orthopedics and bariatrics. The sole provider of emergency care on Long Island’s South Fork, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital is a provisional Level III adult Trauma Center.

Summary

The Director of Development will be a motivated leader with proven experience as a frontline fundraiser and development strategist. The Director will lead Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Foundation's Development team and support its continued growth and success. The Director will serve as the right hand to the Chief Development Officer and will provide strategic guidance to maintain and maximize the organization's individual donor base. Ideal candidates will have extensive experience working with individual donors and will be able to build meaningful relationships with constituents to successfully secure philanthropic support.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of development professionals. Provide ongoing guidance and motivation, ensure strong internal communication, evaluate performance, and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer to develop annual fundraising goals, align department efforts, and facilitate short- and long-term strategic plans
  • Foster a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development is executed in alignment with the organization's values, vision, and mission
  • Create and implement annual solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship plans, instituting moves management and other pipeline development initiatives to secure major gifts and build individual donor support
  • Manage a portfolio of top-tier donors and prospects with responsibility for soliciting gifts ranging from $100K to $1M from high-net-worth individuals
  • Build, optimize and manage the Legacy Society planned giving program, knowledgeably leveraging an array of planned giving vehicles and blended gift opportunities
  • Design and manage a comprehensive direct mail program and online giving strategies; analyze direct mail/e-mail solicitation program results data to refine and increase ROI
  • Participate in internal leadership meetings; serve as a thought partner and provide input and advice on organizational policies and priorities
  • Ensure accurate, appropriate, and timely reporting and stewardship following philanthropic contributions
  • Ensure efficient execution of development operations and functions to meet and exceed philanthropic goals
  • Establish performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate the efficacy of the development program
  • Identify and address development issues that affect the well-being and success of the organization
  • Maintain accountability and ensure compliance with all regulations and laws, as well as the code of ethics for fundraising professionals
  • Represent SBSH Foundation at events and community functions; serve as an ambassador of the organization
  • Keep abreast of developments in philanthropy and fund development

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 10+ years of experience fundraising for nonprofit organizations with an emphasis on individual giving; capital campaign experience preferred
  • CFRE Certification advantageous
  • Knowledge of planned giving vehicles and ability to incorporate such opportunities into overall individual giving strategy
  • Excellent relationship-building skills with diverse stakeholders, including funders, organizational leaders, and team members at all levels of the organization
  • A track record of working with high-profile donors and maintaining professionalism at all times
  • A proven ability to develop and execute winning fundraising strategies and techniques, particularly with individual donors
  • Communication and interpersonal skills of the highest caliber
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines and to coach direct reports to do the same
  • Organization, time-management, and problem-solving skills
  • Sophistication and gravitas necessary for high-level relationship building and management
  • Curiosity, initiative, and adaptability to thrive and contribute to a growing team
  • Willingness and ability to travel to meet donors
