Position Summary:

The Director of Community Engagement for HRC’s Transgender Justice Initiative is responsible for coordinating with community-based and trans-led organizations to direct multi-year projects that advance transgender justice. Initiatives include work related to economic empowerment; capacity building; targeted task forces advancing public safety; and expanded public education campaigns -- with specific attention to work improving the lives of community members deeply impacted by racism, sexism and transphobia. The Director will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders and providing organizational leadership engaging stakeholders in dialogue that informs and advances the work.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Community Engagement: Provide leadership for HRC’s Transgender Justice Initiatives, engaging community stakeholders, HRC staff and volunteers, and partner organizations in designing projects that address community needs, particularly Black and Latinx transgender communities.
  • Capacity Building: Develop and lead HRC’s ACTIVATE program -- a professional development fellowship program for transgender advocates that launches in 2020 and will focus on enhancing the core skills needed to access and succeed in leadership roles in the nonprofit sector, particularly in areas experiencing high-documented anti-trans violence. Work will include curriculum development, training, relationship management and partner collaboration. Collaborate with HIV & Health Equity staff on HRC’s ELEVATE program – a professional and leadership development program for transgender women of color in public health fields.
  • Project Management & Teamwork: Work with key partners and HRC staff to manage the creation and execution of new strategies and various campaigns that address the current realities of transgender people, especially Black and Latinx women. This work includes collaborating with community leaders, HRC staff and volunteers to establish task forces urging public safety and government officials to address the disparities that put transgender people at risk of violence. Bring expertise and capacity around transgender justice to colleagues across the organization and movement, identifying opportunities to complement programmatic work and maximize resources.
  • Communications & public education. Work closely with HRC staff to amplify the voices of individuals and advocates with a keen eye toward reducing stigma facing transgender people, increasing awareness and encouraging action among key stakeholders. Maintain subject matter expertise and serve as an internal expert. Serve as one of several spokespeople for HRC’s work to advance transgender justice to external stakeholders, including press.
  • Budgeting: Determine the costs and benefits of various initiatives. Maintain accurate financial records and work with colleagues to steward supporters. Develop and monitor annual program budgets.
  • Management: May supervise staff, interns and volunteers, including when applicable interviewing, hiring, training, conducting performance reviews, coaching, motivating, and disciplining employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Position Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in experience is required with at least five to seven years of equivalent experience working directly with transgender people – particularly communities of color – to advance community advocacy goals is required.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets preferred.
  • Two to three years of staff and/or volunteer management experience preferred.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, able to manage multiple projects, and have strong attention to detail.
  • Strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Previous experience with budget development.
  • Willing to go above and beyond to get results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience writing website and blog content is strongly preferred, as is experience with public health, public policy and LGBTQ advocacy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are required
  • Strong skills with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Apps (Gmail, Google Docs and Drive)
  • Strong commitment to and interest in the rapidly changing LGBTQ equality movement, and knowledge of LGBTQ issues.
  • Flexibility with work schedule; must be willing to travel and work evening and weekend hours. Must be willing and able to travel at least 25% of work time.
