American Humane seeks a highly-motivated Development Officer to work in collaboration internal and external stakeholders to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospective and current donors in order to further the mission of American Humane. This position is based at American Humane’s national headquarters in Washington, DC and reports directly to the Director, Major Gifts - West.

Position summary:

The Development Officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding current and prospective individual, foundation, and corporate donors in their support of American Humane’s mission and programmatic areas.  While responsibilities of this position will be varied and versatility is important, work will be heavily focused in two areas: 1) developing, writing and managing strong grant proposals, LOIs, reports and other related materials and 2) developing, cultivating and stewarding a portfolio of donors.

This position will be accountable for maintaining files and calendars, tracking proposal and report deadlines, conducting proactive background research and developing prospect pipelines, coordinating acknowledgement and stewardship efforts, and processing incoming grants in coordination with the accounting team.  The Officer works closely with the Director, Major Gifts, National Director, Development and other staff to raise money in order to further the overall mission of the organization.


  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of gift prospects capable of giving significant contributions to American Humane.
  • In consultation with the Director, Major Gifts, determine appropriate donor strategies that capitalize on all the assets of American Humane.
  • Produce high quality proposals, reports and other cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship materials as needed.
  • Serve as internal, and in some cases external, point of contact for grant proposal submissions and reporting.
  • Work across the organization to lead the writing and editing of proposals, letters of inquiry, reports and other relevant materials.
  • Track and coordinate the proposal development process for all proposals going out on behalf of AH – tracking deadlines, developing clear internal processes for proposal preparation, and creating high-quality materials.
  • Maintain a calendar of corporate deliverables, grant report and proposal deadlines, and regularly communicate and collaborate with program and Development staff to ensure grant materials are prepared according to the donor’s guidelines and arrive in advance of deadlines.
  • Meet (by phone and in person as needed) with prospective and current donors both independently or in collaboration with volunteers, executive, development, or program staff.
  • Work and travel, as needed, with other staff to plan and conduct visits, presentations, and events.
  • Develop an effective moves management strategy for moving donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure.
  • Enter and track all activities, actions, call reports and deadlines in Raisers Edge Database and other tracking systems.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with donors in your portfolio and communicate regularly by mail, email and phone.
  • Follow up cultivation activities with appropriate gift solicitation, reporting, and stewardship of donors.
  • Conduct background research on prospective donors and partners and present this information in a concise, detailed manner.

Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Demonstrate drive and an ownership mentality.
  • Must possess a client service attitude and ability to think on your feet.
  • Maintain positive, professional demeanor at all times.
  • Conduct oneself with confidence on phone calls and in donor meetings.
  • Ability to emotionally and colorfully describe the incredible work done by American Humane to help animals and veterans.
  • Self-disciplined, able to prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines, strong work ethic.
  • Two or more years of sales or fundraising experience required.
  • Two or more years of grant writing and/or nonprofit development experience preferred.
  • Experience identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer technology including applications for project and data management and electronic calendars (Raiser’s Edge, Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook preferred).  Ability to quickly learn software specific to the department or institution.
  • Strong written (including proof reading and editing) and oral communication skills, including the ability to briefly summarize the essence of issues and means to address them.  Uses appropriate grammar in verbal or written form.
  • Exceptional organizational skills including the ability to set and meet priorities, juggle multiple tasks, and conduct research and identify prospective resources to further missional work.
  • Sound judgment and discretion in handling and securing confidential information, as well as the ability to conduct oneself in a highly professional manner.
  • Flexibility to work as part of a team or independently to meet goals in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.  Self-directed to take action and resolve issues.
  • Make appropriate decisions or choices based on understanding alternative courses of action and potential repercussions.

Physical demands and work environment:

  • Position based in Washington, DC headquarters office.
  • Standard working office environment.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee will be regularly required to:
    • Sit for extended periods;
    • Look at and work off of a computer screen for extended periods;
    • Talk, hear and exchange information over the telephone and in person.
  • Local and national travel will be required at times, estimated up to 15% with the possibility for increased travel over time.
