Employment Opportunity: Part-Time Director of Development and Communications

Reporting To: Executive Director

Location: Flexible remote working arrangements; some in person meetings and events in Chicago and the suburbs

 

About FHSR: The Foundation for Hearing & Speech Resources (FHSR) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Chicago that creates and funds unique programming to support children living with hearing loss in Illinois. For more than 60 years, our rich history and involvement with countless donors and volunteer leaders has allowed us to create innovative programming to support families affected by hearing loss.

The Role: Reporting to the Executive Director (ED) and serving as an integral member of the FHSR staff, this new, part-time position will be a critical component of a growing, dynamic team which will help create a sustainable strategic fundraising plan for FHSR. The Director of Development and Communications will be responsible for creating and executing a comprehensive plan that incorporates all organizational fundraising initiatives, focusing on growth.  This includes events, donor solicitation and stewardship, and a grant program, all of which will help support FHSR in the next chapter of its history.  The Director of Development and Communications will spearhead FHSR’s growth trajectory by increasing donor base, increasing secured grants (both renewal and new), expanding  corporate relationships, and participating in strategic planning.  See attached strategic fundraising growth plan.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • In partnership with the ED, build on work to-date to develop and implement an integrated multi-year fundraising plan that supports the strategic growth of programming and the Foundation
  • Build on current grant program success with prospecting, grant tracking, submissions of LOIs and Grant Applications, and grant reporting
  • Work with the ED and Development Committee to design and implement a comprehensive communications plan to compliment the annual fundraising plan: develop print marketing collateral, communications and social media content related to fundraising in collaboration with the staff
  • Plan, collaborate and execute FHSR fundraising activities including FHSR’s grant program oversight, annual appeal, annual fundraising event, corporate partnership campaigns in conjunction with events and programs, and all donor stewardship activities
  • Evaluate current fundraising strategies, focusing on ROI and advocacy impact
  • Identify and steward prospective individual and corporate donors
  • Lead the solicitation and securing of corporate sponsorships, create event sponsorship packages and maximize donations for each event
  • Maintain ongoing communications with individual, corporate and foundation donors
  • Maintain and grow donor database; effectively manage and track donor relationships

 

Desired Experience and Characteristics:

FHSR is looking for a professional who is energized by working with others and sharing the impact that FHSR has on supporting deaf and hard of hearing children by leveling the playing field allowing them to be on par with their hearing peers. This position is key to FHSR’s success and requires a highly organized, creative, detail-oriented and motivated person to serve as lead for revenue generation, donor stewardship and sponsorship.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5+ years prior experience in development and fundraising
  • Proven track record of generating revenue from various sources
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to effectively interface with donors, team members and Board of Directors
  • Experience with grant prospecting, writing and management
  • Must be comfortable engaging individuals on the phone, virtually, and in-person
  • Superior time management, budget management and negotiation skills
  • Ability to multi-task, collaborate with others and be an overall team player
  • Experience with integrating social media into event planning and execution
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proficient with using and managing donor databases and integrated marketing platforms

 

Salary Range & Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a part-time position with the ability to work from home and flexible hours.

 

Job Location and Work Conditions 

The position location is flexible as FHSR does not have a centralized office, and staff works from home. A 20-hour workweek is expected but some evenings and weekends will be required for events and donor engagements. Meetings for the Foundation are a hybrid of in person and video.

 

 

 

Duties by category:

 

Admin: 10%

  • In partnership with the ED, build on work to-date to develop and implement an integrated annual fundraising plan
  • Assist the ED in development of long term fundraising goals over a 3-5 year period
  • Grow and track FHSR donor base
  • Evaluate current fundraising strategies, measure ROI and advocacy impact

 

 

Fundraising: 30%

  • Assist the ED in the planning of annual fundraising event
  • Work with the Executive Director and Development Committee to design and implement a comprehensive communications plan to compliment the annual fundraising plan: develop print marketing collateral, communications and social media content related to fundraising in collaboration with the staff
  • Identify and steward individual and corporate donors
  • Lead the solicitation and securing of corporate sponsorships, create event sponsorship packages and maximize donations for each event;

 

 

Grant Program 60%

  • Evaluate current grant program
  • Working with the ED create a strategic grant program building on past success to support program growth over the next 3-5 years
  • Grant program: prospecting, tracking, submission of LOIs and grant applications, and grant reporting
