Description

Truthout is seeking a Development Associate.

You:

You’re a strong fundraising writer who is passionate about progressive politics and avidly follows the news. You have at least 2 years of experience producing high-quality fundraising copy to meet deadlines and are able to turn around engaging short-form fundraising pitches on a variety of topics. You’re capable of writing for different audiences, and are interested in how the language you use can shape the actions that readers take.

You have a broad familiarity with fundraising processes and systems and feel at home using spreadsheets and databases.

Importantly, you aren’t looking for a “clock in and clock out” kind of job (although you’ll work regular hours with generous time off), but one where you are a key member of a small team and play an integral role in increasing the reach and impact of independent, nonprofit news in an increasingly corporate media landscape.

You’re ready to use your skills to help further the mission of a fast-paced online publication that works day in and day out to make a difference in the world.

Us:

Truthout is a nonprofit news organization dedicated to providing independent reporting and commentary on a diverse range of social justice issues. Since our founding in 2001, we have anchored our work in principles of accuracy, transparency, and independence from the influence of corporate and partisan forces. We are overwhelmingly funded by our readers, and take no ads, corporate sponsorship or political party funding.

Truthout is committed to a vision of journalism in pursuit of justice. We understand that courageous journalism can and does drive social transformation. Through our work, we reveal systemic injustice; provide a platform for powerful ideas; elevate authentic storytelling; and develop journalistic practices that align with our dedication to accountability, equity and integrity. We believe in building the world we want to live in — within our organization, through our journalistic work, and through our work’s impact on society.

The Role:

You will be responsible for crafting campaign concepts and writing short-form and occasional long-form fundraising and marketing copy that draws connections between real-world happenings and the work we do here at Truthout, to catch readers’ attention and inspire action. You’ll also be tasked with the behind-the-scenes work required to maintain and grow a thriving donorbase, including database upkeep, running and interpreting reports, tracking trends and more.

This is a fully remote, work-from-home position, and applicants are welcome from anywhere in the United States. BIPOC, women, LGBTQ candidates, and candidates with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Truthout offers a competitive salary, an industry-leading benefits package, generous paid time off, and a friendly and open work environment.

Required:

  • Has at least 2 years of fundraising experience, preferably for a nonprofit news organization
  • Willingness to take on various tasks as assigned
  • Can commit to a regular schedule that falls within Truthout’s primary working hours (9am to 5:30pm ET)
  • Well versed in a wide range of topics including electoral politics, U.S. foreign policy, activist movements in the U.S., judicial and legislative processes
  • Super-reliable, deadline-driven and punctual
  • Responds with flexibility to unanticipated requests
  • Enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Truthout’s work
  • Thrives working in remote environments, and enjoys working both independently and as part of a small, collaborative team
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a very high level of detail
  • Able to adapt and multi-task
  • Willingness to pick up the phone and engage in regular donor engagement and outreach
  • Experienced working with Microsoft Word and Excel as well as Google Workspace
  • Able to communicate in a friendly, thoughtful and effective manner via online chat, phone and email
  • Reliable access to the internet during specified work hours

Preferred:

  • Familiar with WordPress and Salsa
  • Familiar with the broader landscape of fundraising in online news publications
