Position Summary:

 

The Deputy Director, Stakeholder Engagement is responsible for managing key corporate, health care, and youth-serving institutional engagement efforts that help advance the public policy goals of the Human Rights Campaign. These include stakeholder-organizing activities in support of litigation, federal and state policy initiatives such as sign-on letters, public messaging campaigns, amicus briefs, etc. The Deputy Director of Stakeholder engagement is a full-time position that reports to the Director of Stakeholder Engagement.

 

The Deputy Director is responsible for supporting the Director in developing the strategy and vision for the stakeholder engagement program, as well as day-to-day management of initiatives in partnership and cross-team collaboration within the Foundation, the Public Policy and Political Affairs (PPA), Communications, Corporate Development and Marketing teams. Working closely with the Director, the Deputy Director will also be responsible for collaboration with external partners and representing HRC in public forums where appropriate. 

 

Position Responsibilities:

 

  • Serve as a thought partner with the Director to develop the strategy and vision for stakeholder engagement activities of the Human Rights Campaign, including support of the Business Coalition for the Equality Act, state legislative engagement, impact litigation, and public messaging. 
  • With the Director, expand engagement audiences to include the healthcare sector and youth-serving institutions through the development of engagement goals, communication tools, and internal workflows.
  • In consultation with the Workplace Equality Program and the Director, manage the planning, vetting, and designation of the Best Places to Work award to include criteria development, external nomination process, and internal review of submissions. 
  • Support the planning and execution of stakeholder convening, both virtually and in person, including in-state corporate briefings and national corporate engagement activities for the Business Coalition for the Equality Act.
  • Develop new engagement resources and tools for our corporate stakeholders, including fact sheets, presentations, and research in coordination with the research team.
  • Serve as project manager for all list maintenance and program data hygiene by supporting the Foundation Stakeholder Engagement Coordinator in executing regular updates and list curation, as well as maintaining accurate and organized files and records on a shared drive.
  • Manage communications with stakeholders, including the development of the weekly stakeholder engagement newsletter, bi-weekly public policy briefings, and action alerts.
  • Serve as liaison for inter-departmental coordination with the Communications, Marketing, Corporate Development, and Public Policy and Political Affairs teams. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience), with at least six to eight years of relevant work experience. 
  • Experience managing successful stakeholder engagement and coalition-led advocacy efforts, particularly with corporate stakeholders 
  • Familiarity with both federal and state legislative processes
  • Demonstrable success developing and managing complex projects across a matrixed organization
  • Skill in program development, implementation, analysis, and evaluation
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.  
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with both internal and external stakeholders, including C-suite level executives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word), Excel, Google Suite (docs.)and web-based applications; high aptitude for database applications and PowerPoint
  • Proficient in the use of Salesforce desired
  • Experience and knowledge of LGBTQ+ public policy issues preferred 
  • Must be willing to travel, 10-20% of the time; Flexibility with work schedule due to this position having evening and weekend work.

 

All positions at the Human Rights Campaign may require travel on a regular basis or periodically. Where the need arises for business travel, appropriate compensation as outlined by the Fair Labor Standards Act will apply.
