Description

We are a leading national voice on anti-hunger and social justice. We work independently and in coalition with partners to protect and strengthen government nutrition programs that help people put food on the table, explore innovative solutions to persistent challenges to food security, and undertake unique strategies to bring such solutions to fruition. We educate communities across the country about the reality of hunger and how they can join us to help end it.

Position Overview:

The organization seeks an organized, thoughtful, and detail-oriented Communications Associate to help implement a strategic, multi-faceted communications program designed to promote the organization’s advocacy priorities, raise funds, and grow brand visibility. The Communications Associate will devise and implement systems to manage our public relations and digital presence, as well as proactively identify opportunities.

This position will be remote, with the option of working from our office in Los Angeles, CA or Washington, DC.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist Vice President of Communications with day-to-day department projects, events, meetings, and general operations.
  • Work closely with Vice President of Communications and Senior Communications Manager to implement cross-channel communications strategy and various public relations tactics to advance the organization’s advocacy, development, and programmatic goals.
  • Devise and implement systems to manage the organization’s online presence, including website and social media platforms. Compile regular analysis of the organization’s digital engagement and opportunities to grow brand visibility.
  • Manage logistics for speaking engagements — for staff, board, and other spokespeople.
  • Collaborate with various departments — Public Policy, Programs, and Community Engagement — to capture the organization’s unique voice in all outward-facing materials and communications.
  • Monitor and stay up to date on anti-hunger issues in mainstream and niche media outlets, identifying opportunities for the organization to engage, advance policy priorities, and raise visibility.
  • Curate the organization’s story bank, media library (photos, videos, audio files, etc.), editorial calendars, and press tracking documents.
  • Draft newsletter articles, talking points, speeches, opinion pieces, blog posts, and other materials as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Some nights and weekends required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit and/or public affairs organization highly preferred. Social justice, anti-hunger, or Jewish community experience a plus.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent judgment, critical thinking, analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Keen eye for design and attention to detail.
  • Ability to take direction well, manage deadlines efficiently, work independently, and collaborate effectively with various teams and partners.

Compensation and Benefits:

We offer a compensation package that includes a competitive salary range of $53,000 to $56,000. Employer-paid benefits include comprehensive medical insurance as well as Life/Disability/AD&D insurance. Other benefits include a 401K plan with an employer match, FSA participation, and dental, vision, and AFLAC insurance at a discounted group rate. We offer a very generous vacation and sick time plan and holiday schedule, including all major Jewish holidays. We close early on Fridays in observance of Shabbat. We have a fun office environment (even virtually!) and a fantastic team who are dedicated to the meaningful work we do.
