Position Summary: 

Reporting to the CEO, the Chief Strategy Officer will lead strategy development, evaluation, and implementation of Tides Advocacy’s pro-Black fiscal sponsorship, grantmaking, and capacity building model. The Chief Strategy Officer oversees the execution of the cross-functional partner experience and service delivery in partnership with the Leadership Team. They will supervise and support leadership development of the Advising team. 

This role will focus on Tides Advocacy’s strategic transformation to support BIPOC led advocacy groups and donors in the political space. They will ensure a racial justice and progressive movement lens is applied across decision making and design of services for partners; including but not limited to mutual aid programs, security and safety, and healing justice. 

This is an exempt position which can be based in the New York and San Francisco office, or fully remote. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Organizational Strategy, Learning & Evaluation 

  • Lead Tides Advocacy’s strategic transformation to be a pro-Black fiscal sponsor and capacity building infrastructure for progressive 501c4 organizations and donors  
  • Lead multi-year and annual strategy setting and impact metrics for our internal team to improve service commitments and partner experience  
  • Oversee culturally responsive programs and initiatives surfaced from network of advocacy groups, funding partners, and internal team, such as Beyond Impact and Healthy Democracy Action Fund 
  • Support partner relationship building, advisory structures, and feedback loops to support strategic and operational decisions 
  • Serve as trusted confidant to partners and respected thought leader on capacity building for political movement leaders 
  • Support organizational development, political education, and learning systems to support anti-racist and movement centered practices and policies 

Internal Operations and Program Management 

  • Supervise and support the growth of the Advising Team members  
  • Facilitate service team communication and collaborative practice 
  • Collaborate with CEO on Board development and reporting on pro-Black strategic transformation and workplan 
  • Oversee development of strategic and organizational resources, systems, and tools to support capacity building to impact goals 
  • Partner with 501c3 affiliate, Tides, for joint initiatives and strategic efforts, including service commitments for shared partners 
  • Partner with the Political Director and Legal, Risk, and Compliance team to support structuring of c3, c4 and PAC-affiliate relationships that powerfully advance organization's mission
  • Support seamless on-boarding plan and training processes for partners across departments 
  • Oversee the responsive communication with all partners regarding service, policy, systems, and capacity building needs in partnership with Communications team

Knowledge & Skills: 

  • Commitment to a pro-Black movement infrastructure building independent political power in progressive space
  • Expertise in organizational development and capacity building of BIPOC led organizations at all stages of growth in non profit and/or political space 
  • Leadership and/or management experience overseeing teams and managing change initiatives 
  • Experience developing and evaluating strategic multi-year and annual strategic plans
  • Applies racial justice and political frameworks to inform collaborative practices, policies, and decisions 
  • Understanding of political BIPOC led organization
  • Excellent communication, influencing, persuasion, engagement and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to gather and synthesize information that suggests new possibilities.
  • Analytical and conceptual thinker, ability to engage and facilitate broad strategic thinking and planning
  • Excellent project management, operational capacity and budgeting skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple commitments and drive high profile and complex projects simultaneously in a challenging and fluid environment.
  • Ability to build and manage long-term relationships and communicate with executive leaders
