Scion Executive Search (www.scionexecutivesearch.com) has been retained to conduct a search for a new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Community Foundation of the Ozarks, a wonderful public community foundation working to enhance the quality of life in the Missouri Ozarks region through resource development, community grantmaking, collaboration and public leadership. This executive leadership opportunity is for immediate hire and will work full-time in the Foundation’s office in beautiful Springfield, Missouri.

ABOUT COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE OZARKS:

The Community Foundation of the Ozarks provides place-based philanthropic services for communities in southern Missouri through an extensive network of donors, affiliate foundations and nonprofit partners. The foundation helps build stronger communities through resource development and public leadership. Founded in 1973, the Foundation holds over $287 million in assets through some 3,500 charitable funds, ranking the foundation as the 72nd largest foundation in the annual Columbus Survey and the 10th busiest foundation in transaction volume.

The Foundation is anchored in Springfield, Missouri, the state’s third largest city and a regional hub with several universities, major healthcare systems, and a variety of recreational and cultural experiences. The foundation serves the population of Springfield and a large rural geography, granting easy proximity to beautiful natural resources, including well-known tourism and retiree destinations in Branson and Lake of the Ozarks. The Foundation’s urban-rural diversity creates complex specific needs, as well as many opportunities for philanthropic leadership.

ABOUT THE SPRINGFIELD MISSOURI CITY & REGION:

The city of Springfield is a growing economic center providing support for start-ups and entrepreneurs and boasts a 2.5% unemployment rate. Additionally, university and college settings make culture, arts and academic pursuits front and center to the community. Live on the north side of the city in an older area that’s been reborn, or check out the new lofts in the downtown, commercial district. The nearby Ozarks are known for adventure, sports and recreation.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

As the organization grows and evolves to best serve its constituents, the Community Foundation of the Ozarks is seeking a collaborative, creative and highly experienced CFO. The Board is excited about the future of the Foundation, and with that comes the need for adaptable, communicative and energetic leadership. The CFO will be a strategic thought-partner for – and report directly to – the President of the Foundation as a member of the senior leadership team. The CFO will also work in with the Board of Directors, and specifically the Investment Advisory Board. The CFO will play a key role in ensuring the organization’s successful operations and in safeguarding its long-term financial stability.

Through the implementation of learned financial strategy and careful analysis, the CFO will counsel on the financial implications of managerial, operational, strategic, and programmatic activities throughout the Foundation.

Key aspects/requirements of this role include:

  • Strong knowledge of investments
  • Strong knowledge of accounting
  • Strong financial stewardship and the highest level of integrity

Additionally, this position will lead the technology strategy for the foundation (including an IT assessment) and assist with managing risk for the foundation (i.e. cyber and other insurances).

This highly impactful role is best suited for a candidate who is comfortable with public speaking and presenting reports, budgets and outcomes, who is skilled at building consensus internally among leadership, as well as externally via educating diverse groups and who is confident, yet diplomatic about expressing the best strategic financial paths/options.

Community Foundation of the Ozarks seeks a true partner to the President who is driven by the mission of the Foundation and its regional impact and is capable of assisting with smart business decisions in collaboration with the leadership team.

 POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key responsibilities:

  • Financial and investment management, compliance and risk management, information technology and creative, cross-functional philanthropic services.

Additional duties include but are not limited to:

  • Overall administration of all financial records including, but not limited to the general ledger, grants, gifts, investments, spending policy, administrative fees, payroll, and insurance.
  • Oversee compliance of financial system and records to federal and state regulations, generally accepted accounting principles, Board policies, industry standards and other required standards.
  • Devise and maintain a system of internal controls to facilitate the safeguarding of the Foundation’s assets.
  • Oversee cash management to provide liquidity needed for grants and operations.
  • Develop and deliver financial data and support to the other Foundation departments as needed.
  • Create and provide financial reports to agencies as needed.
  • Serve as the primary intermediary and liaison for the foundation’s OCIO and the managers of the Foundation’s investment pool (key oversight responsibility).
  • Ensure timely and efficient preparation of annual audited financial statements, 990 tax returns, and relevant Federal filings and industry standards.
  • Oversee compliance matters relating to federal, state and local laws and national best practice standards, including requirements applying to Section 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charities and those specific to community foundations.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business and a minimum of ten years of relevant experience, preferably in a nonprofit or foundation environment, is required. A minimum of ten years of managerial experience in leading a team and mentoring/coaching staff is required along with knowledge of investments including portfolio construction and risk management.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in the areas of planning, financial management and operational oversight and have a complete understanding of operations related to non-profit organizations, preferably, community foundations. The ideal candidate will also have strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to think strategically. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license and/or prior foundation or related nonprofit leadership experience sought.
