Introduction
The Central Hardwoods Joint Venture (CHJV) is a voluntary, bird conservation partnership that seeks to promote landscape-level habitat conservation throughout the Central Hardwoods Bird Conservation Region in strategic support of collaboratively identified goals for birds and bird populations. The CHJV is one of a family of Joint Venture partnerships that operate "wall to wall" across the U.S. and Canada implementing continental level plans for all birds developed under the auspices of Partners in Flight, the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, and other initiatives. CHJV partners comprise state, federal, NGO, academic and private stakeholders who leverage resources and expertise to undertake biological planning, landscape design, habitat delivery, research and evaluation, and communication activities central to a strategic, science-driven conservation approach. Effective coordination is a core element of the partnership's operations, which target four priority habitat types: grasslands, savanna-woodlands, forests, and wetlands.
The CHJV Coordinator provides leadership in recommending priorities and directions for the partnership, oversees day-to-day operations, supervises other CHJV staff, and is generally responsible for carrying out the vision and directives of the CHJV Management Board. The CHJV Coordinator will be employed by American Bird Conservancy. Other CHJV staff presently include a Conservation Delivery Coordinator, who works closely with partners to promote restoration and management of public and private lands in support of population goals for priority birds, and an Avian Ecologist who helps to ensure conservation delivery activities are based on sound science and state-of-the-art knowledge of bird-habitat relationships.
The CHJV Coordinator must, through their past experience and education, demonstrate an ability and aptitude to lead the CHJV in achieving its mission. Ideal applicants will possess strong experience working with diverse partnerships or stakeholders in a concerted effort to realize common goals, as the ability to build trust and foster relationships is essential in harnessing capacity to accomplish ambitious conservation outcomes. Supervisory experience is preferred. A working knowledge of scientific disciplines that typically underpin natural resource conservation is required. Technical knowledge pertaining to avian ecology, and natural resource needs and opportunities within the CHJV, is preferred. At minimum, applicants must possess a Master's degree in a natural resources/natural science field, or a Master's degree in another relevant discipline combined with demonstrably relevant experience in a conservation context.
The CHJV Coordinator assumes principal responsibilities for initiating, facilitating, integrating, communicating, and directing the work and activities of the partnership in several primary functional arenas: administration and operations; biological planning; conservation delivery; research, monitoring, and evaluation; and communication, education, and outreach. The Coordinator works collaboratively with the CHJV Management Board, staff, and other partners to develop, initiate, and coordinate priority projects and provide the oversight and direction necessary for successful completion. The Coordinator represents the interests of the CHJV and its partners in a variety of professional forums.
Primary Duties and Skills
- Develop, nurture, and maintain effective partnerships.
- Lead strategic and operational planning for the partnership.
- Develop and manage the CHJV budget in conjunction with finance staff at American Bird Conservancy.
- Seek external funding through grant writing and management, as well as through partners and cooperative arrangements. Ensure that all CHJV obligations are met and exceeded, as relevant.
- Define and oversee work assignments and priorities for CHJV staff, with guidance from the Management Board and other partners.
- Coordinate CHJV meetings and workshops; facilitate internal and external communication; provide oversight regarding the development and implementation of projects; and evaluate and report short- and long-term results.
- Stimulate technical and media support for Joint Venture activities and projects.
- Must be able to work independently with little oversight on a daily basis and provide strong leadership and vision to implement the conservation priorities of the partnership.
- Serve as a public spokesperson for the CHJV.
- The Coordinator position will be directed by the CHJV Management Board and American Bird Conservancy.
Position Requirements
- Master’s degree or higher preferred.
- A strong background in effective development and nurturing of sustainable conservation partnerships with more than five years of experience.
- Knowledge of the theories, principles, and methods of landscape ecology, adaptive ecosystem management, monitoring, and research, and their application to bird conservation and planning at multiple spatial and temporal scales with more than five years of experience.
- Experience leading strategic planning, as well as biological planning and landscape conservation design.
- Experience in supervising staff.
- Working knowledge of Strategic Habitat Conservation and/or an adaptive management approach to conservation.
- Experience in successfully writing grant proposals and cultivating donors.
- An understanding of the role of GIS in landscape conservation.
- Familiarity with Migratory Bird Joint Ventures and other bird conservation initiatives.
- Knowledge of ecosystems and bird conservation issues, especially in the Central Hardwoods Region.
- Significant travel could be required throughout the year (20%+ post COVID).
- Demonstrated ability to translate strategic, visionary ideas into functioning, sustainable programs and initiatives that produce lasting results.
- Excellent planning, management, and team building skills.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Authorized to work in US as either a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Background screening required.
