Description

The Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life at Wesleyan University seeks a director to oversee its extensive portfolio of curricular and co-curricular programs. The Director will advance the vision of Wesleyan as a university that prioritizes civic engagement as a core tenet of the University’s mission, in alignment with the Towards Wesleyan’s Bicentennial strategic plan.

The Allbritton Center works to build the civic capacity of students, faculty, and staff and to ensure that civic responsibility is a visible institutional commitment (President’s Civic Action Plan, 2017). Allbritton is a hub for civic engagement across campus and beyond and includes six distinct curricular and co-curricular units: the Jewett Center for Community Partnerships, the Center for the Study of Public Life (CSPL), the Patricelli Center for Social Entrepreneurship, Office of Service Learning, the Sustainability Office, and the Civic Engagement Minor. These units will report to the Director.

Reporting to the Provost, the Allbritton Director will collaborate with faculty, students, and staff across campus to develop a vision to strengthen civic engagement at Wesleyan, oversee all activities of the Allbritton Center, teach one to two courses per year (including the Civic Engagement Minor Senior Capstone Seminar), partner with other faculty to administer the Civic Engagement Minor, support Service Learning, and manage CSPL faculty and student grants. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, connecting with community partners to build relationships, and participating in governance at the university level. The Director will meet bi-annually with the President’s Cabinet.

Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college that values both scholarship and teaching very highly, has a strong, diverse undergraduate student body, and offers a generous sabbatical program and competitive salaries and benefits.

The Allbritton Director will demonstrate a commitment to advancing learning and scholarship related to civic engagement, engaged learning, and the study of public life. Candidates should hold a terminal degree in a related field. The Director’s appointment, including senior faculty or staff designations, will be commensurate with experience.
