Position responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Finance & Accounting/Controller, the Accounting Manager is responsible for the daily management of accounting functions and operations, ensuring the financial system is accurate, efficient and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. This role will support the implementation and management of financial systems, manage the monthly and year-end accounting cycles, supporting the preparation of annual financial statements and other IRS tax documents.

Individuals must have the ability to perform responsibilities professionally and to handle assignments with a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality—proven organizational skills including excellent time management and ability to prioritize tasks required. The position requires strong communications skills and candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced environment both independently and as a member of a team.

More specifically, the Accounting Manager will perform the following:
Accounting Management:

  • Manage the full accounting cycle, including timely monthly close process, and producing quarterly, and annual financial reports
  • Manage the weekly accounts payable process and reviewing posted entries by Staff Accountant
  • Manage month-end journal entries and close procedures
  • Manage monthly reconciliation process across accounts, including bank recs, payroll, rent, and A/P, analyzing for completeness and appropriateness of recorded transactions
  • Prepare routine and closing journal entries, and review those prepared by other staff members and accountant(s) as requested by the Controller
  • Manage interfund / intercompany charges and reconciliations.
  • Manage monthly analysis of all accounts/categories and monthly P&L variance analysis

Accounting Systems Management

  • Assist with implementation of necessary fiscal policies and internal control procedures for efficient and accurate accountability of the organization's finances and in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Ensure financial duties are distributed according to internal controls for maximum protection of the organization’s assets
  • Ensure financial transactions are properly authorized, appropriated, executed, and recorded according to policies and procedures
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and other master data within the accounting system.
  • Serves as backup for accounting duties assigned to other staff members
  • Adhere to proper accounting methods, policies and principles, identify areas of efficiency and proactively provide recommendations for process improvement
  • Maintain organized, accurate and secure accounting and finance files, including but not limited to; performing rigorous quality control on accounting records and ensuring accurate inventory records are maintained by program teams

Tax and Audit:

  • Assist in the preparation of the Annual financial statements
  • Prepare accurate, comprehensive, and timely year-end working papers to be submitted to outside auditors
  • Support the Controller and CFOO with the annual audit
  • Assist in the preparation of other IRS tax forms as needed

Budgeting & Reporting:

  • Assist in preparing and tracking annual budgets
  • Assist in preparing financial reports, dashboards of key metrics and cash flow analysis/projections
  • Produce ad hoc reports and analysis as assigned and provide schedules to assist with month end close and various financial audits
  • Assist the Controller with responding to all levels of management’s inquiries on monthly statements, budgets and forecasts

Other:

  • Maintain appropriate working documentation for all work products
  • Prepare and maintain up to date, written, fully explanatory procedures for all task responsibilities
  • Ensures excellent service by providing timely and accurate information to stakeholders as needed and, in a result, -driven/professional manner at all times
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of the organization’s grants management systems to extract information and prepare reports
  • Perform other duties as assigned and provide backup support to meet the deadlines/ objectives of the Finance Department/organization

More specifically, the Earth Fund seeks a professional who has:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (e.g., accounting, finance) required
  •  7-10+ years of accounting and/or bookkeeping experience, including 2-3 years at the accounting manager level.
  • CPA designation preferred
  • Experience with full accounting cycle, including month and year end close, bank reconciliation and accounts payable/receivable, preferably in a non-profit grant making organization.
  • Experience preparing timely monthly financial reports and year-end financial statements
  • Experience managing or supporting organization annual audit.
  • Experience working in non-profit financial software such as Sage Intacct, Blackbaud; Financial Edge, NetSuite.
  • Experience managing and monitoring internal control procedures and practices
  • Demonstrated progressive professional growth
  • Superior analytical skills with above-average MS Excel skills required.
  • Demonstrated capacity to juggle and manage numerous projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated success in delivering high-quality work product on a consistent, reliable basis in a fast-paced work environment with ambitious goals.
  • Proven ability to be a team player, self-starter and motivated in performing the duties and responsibilities of the job and the goals of the Finance Department

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
