Annually Celebrated November 12-18: Engage with Your Local Community Today!
Community Foundation Week, created in 1989 by former president George H.W. Bush, recognizes the important work of community foundations throughout America and their collaborative and innovative approach to working with the public, private, and nonprofit sector. November 12-18, 2014, marks the 25th annual Community Foundation Week, and the 100th year of community foundations as a force for change in our country. As in years past, Community Foundation Week coincides with National Philanthropy Day (sponsored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals) on November 15. The Council on Foundations will promote Community Foundation Week through national outreach and advocacy channels. Help raise awareness by telling your community about the work that your foundation is doing to address persistent civic and economic challenges. To help support your work, the Council has designed a series of resources designed to assist you with outreach and awareness building, including writing an op-ed or press release, conducting outreach on social media, and providing general facts about community foundations.
Remember, these efforts come at an increasingly crucial time. We are currently facing serious threats to our field from lawmakers who don't understand the importance of long-term endowments and who disregard the complex, collective roles that you play in your communities as leaders and conveners. We need your support to help us push back against these threats by helping us tell your story. Let's stand together to amplify the power of our voices.
Also be sure to watch Vikki Spruill's speech from the 2014 Fall Conference for Community Foundations about Building the Next Century of Community Philanthropy.
